Writing workshop ‘Landscape, People, and the Natural World’ with author Linda Buckmaster
JEFFERSON — The workshop, “Writing Place: Landscape, People, and the Natural World,” led by author Linda Buckmaster, will be offered Saturday, October 23, from 10 a..m. to 2 p.m., by Midcoast Conservancy at Hidden Valley Nature Center, in Jefferson.
The class is limited to 15 participants, and pre-registration is required.
The workshop is for writers of all levels and interests. Writing poetry or prose, each participant will work at their own level. Writing about place involves working with elements that make a specific place unique — layers of history, the natural world, and human culture.
Through writing prompts and activities both inside and outdoors, participants will play with words, experiences and experiments. A small packet of reading materials will be available the week before the workshop. The group will maintain a safe environment so participants can feel comfortable trying new things.
Participants are encouraged to bring a bag lunch, and hot drinks will be served.
Buckmaster is a place-based writer who has lived within a block of the Atlantic most of her life. A former poet laureate of Belfast, her poetry, essays and fiction have appeared in over 40 journals and five anthologies. Her hybrid memoir, Space Heart. A Memoir in Stages, was published by Burrow Press in 2018. Two of her pieces have been listed as “Notable Essays” in Best American Essays 2013 and 2020.
She taught in the University of Maine system for 25 years and is currently working on a literary journey across the North Atlantic following the cod. Her website is www.lindabuckmaster.com.
The cost for the workshop is $20 for Conservancy members, $30 for nonmembers. To register, visit midcoastconservancy.org/events.
