William B. Makinen, obituary
HERMON — William Brian Makinen, age 60, passed away from natural causes at home in Hermon, Maine, Oct 14, 2021. Born in Marblehead, Massachusetts, February 8, 1961 to Gladys G. and Leslie A. Makinen.
He grew up locally in Tenants Harbor, attending the St. George school and George’s Valley high school. He followed in his fathers footsteps becoming a boatbuilder, both wooden and fiberglass. He spent his earlier years working for Dan at Clark Island Boat works until moving to Florida where he continued in glass, just of a different kind. He worked for Bill’s Custom Glass, of Naples, installing windows and screens. It was during this time he had his pride and joy. Bill was a huge TV wrestling fan, and named his son after his favorite wrestler.
Bill would spend the next several years being a very entertaining dad. He would take the pontoon boat out every weekend and before Marcus could walk, he could fish. Also before walking, Marcus could drive a golf cart. Bill took him to several golf courses around Florida to teach him to play, “there is nothing like 18 holes to calm the Makinen nerves.” Riding bikes together, playing darts, camping and floating down the Peace River were some of the other things Marcus and Bill enjoyed together. Bill was also a member of the Moose Lodge #1454 Bonita Springs, Florida.
Marcus gave something to Bill in 2020 that was just as awesome as if it were 1993, the title of Papa. Bill was thrilled to be a grandfather, he said “he didn’t think anything could top the feeling of meeting his son for the first time,” then he met Payson; “she tied that for 1st place.” In what years he had on earth Bill definitely made them count, living life to the fullest, doing things his way, on his own terms.
Predeceased by his father, Les; mother, Gladys; gram, Genevieve; and aunt JoAnn; Bill is survived by his son, Marcus P. Makinen, daughter in law, Alexis Fetteroli, granddaughter, Payson Tyler Makinen, all of Thomaston; brother, Scott Makinen of Tenants Harbor; uncle, Jim Finneran of Natick, Massachusetts; aunt Nina Idarola Ware, Massachuestts; and their families.
A private ceremony will be held in the spring.
