‘The Voice and the Head Glands’ sculpture exhibit by Karin Spitfire in Belfast
BELFAST — “The Voice and the Head Glands,” is an art installation of three moveable sculptures — larger-than-life books — exploring the concepts of metaphysical and embodied space created by Karin Spitfire. The exhibit will open Friday, May 5, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Sanctuary on Miller Street, in Belfast; and will be on display every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from 1 - 6 p.m., through the month of May.
The sculptures/books – one constructed with ironing boards, another with two army bed cots, and a third with 9 ft. shutters – are conceptually influenced by the endocrine glands; the fifth, sixth and seventh chakras; and women’s traditional work and arts.
The work is funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, and the photographs of diatoms are courtesy of Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences.
“Karin Spitfire is a conceptual artist, poet and pioneering feminist activist, who has been making things happen in the Midcoast since 1987,” said Spitfire, in a news release.
