‘Thunder Bay’ names its 2014 ‘Sailor of the Year’
ROCKLAND — U.S. Coast Guard cutter Thunder Bay is proud to announce that Machinery Technician First Class Jason Moran was selected as the ship's Sailor of the Year for his outstanding performance of duty in 2014.
Petty Officer Moran was chosen from among the four quarterly nominees for his leading role in the engineering maintenance work required for the ship to conduct a wide range of operations including breaking ice during Operation RENEW, which stands for Reliable Energy for Northeast Winters, and supporting security operations at New York City’s Fleet Week.
During all operations throughout the year, Moran sustained superior quality of work, according to Lt. Zac Bender, commanding officer of the Thunder Bay, in a press release. Bender added that his efforts went beyond the call of duty, including helping fellow crewmembers with motor vehicle repair on his own time.
"MK1 Moran takes great pride in his work and sets an excellent example for others, so it's good to see him receive this recognition," said Bender.
Bender said petty officers named Sailor of the Quarter in 2014 were SN Michael Lozano, MK2 Southworth Knight and FS2 Charles Sanders.
