Searsport man arrested for OUI, found asleep behind the wheel
BELFAST — A Searsport man was charged with multiple offenses after being discovered unconscious behind the wheel of his truck on Rolerson Road Aug. 26.
Jason A. Kilby, 36, was charged with operating under the influence, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, operating after suspension, and violating conditions of release, as a result of the incident.
Kilby was reported to Belfast Police after a concerned citizen noticed a vehicle pulled into a ditch, and an unconscious man behind the wheel.
Officer Michael Rolerson responded to the scene just before 6 a.m., where he discovered Kilby still asleep.
After Rolerson roused him, Kilby reportedly performed poorly in standard field sobriety tests, was unsteady on his feet, and smelled strongly of alcohol, according to Sergeant Daniel Fitzpatrick.
Kilby was placed under arrest, and while examining his vehicle, Rolerson noticed it had sustained substantial damage including a smashed front end and missing side view mirror. Since it appeared the truck was pulled onto the side of the road, Rolerson suspected the vehicle had collided with something before stopping, Fitzpatrick said.
Rolerson traveled back down Rolerson Road searching for anything that appeared to have been struck by a vehicle, ultimately locating tire tracks leading off of Poors Mill Road, located a short distance away. After investigating further, Rolerson located a heavily damaged tree with broken truck pieces around it.
The parts found at the scene appeared to match those missing from Kilby’s vehicle, according to Fitzpatrick.
Kilby reportedly told officers he could not remember the incident.
