Roy P. Doody, obituary
Roy P. Doody, of Cushing and Tenants Harbor, Maine, formerly of Buckland, Mass., died Monday, February 7, 2022 after a period of declining health.
He was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts on April 12, 1954, son of Roy W. and Helen L. (Sears) Doody. He graduated from Greenfield High School, where he met his future wife, Holly Vose. They were married on May 22, 1976 and made their home for almost 30 years in Buckland. In 2006 they fulfilled a long-time dream of living in Maine, and moved to Cushing to be near the family island in Tenants Harbor, where they spent many happy summers with family, friends, and their much-loved dogs.
Roy loved sports, especially the New England teams, and outdoor games with his grandchildren. He was an avid skier in his younger days, skiing all over the Northeast. He loved the “Godfather” movies and westerns, especially any with John Wayne. He also enjoyed bird-watching, from the chickadees and other small birds around his feeders at home, to the bald eagles, osprey, and owls which were always around the island, though his favorite bird was probably cardinals. He loved music, especially that of Led Zeppelin and The Moody Blues.
His cherished grandchildren, Benjamin and Claire, were the highlight of his later years. He loved spending time with them, playing games, treasure hunting on the beach, and hearing their silly stories and their child’s perspectives on life. He could not have been more proud of them or loved them more.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Holly; his daughter, Jill and her partner Gabe of Brandon, Vermont, and his two grandchildren, Benjamin and Claire, also of Brandon; three sisters; Ellie Thresher of Manchester, Connecticut, Susan Pratt of Greenfield, Massachusetts, and Judy Nelson of Clifton Park, New Yorj, as well as many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins and friends from all over, and his grand puppy Mo.
As Roy would have wanted, there will be no funeral, but the family plans to hold a celebration of his life in Greenfield at some point in the better weather. Roy will be cremated and his ashes spread on Northern Island in the spring.
Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 78 Main Street, Thomaston has care of the arrangements.
