ROCKLAND — An Owls Head man was assessed $4,500 in fines April 17 in Rockland District Court for lobster infractions.

Vance McMahan, 49, was found guilty of taking/transporting/selling/possessing V-notched lobster in Owls Head Sept. 20, 2013, which resulted in a $900 fine.

The V-notch program, where a small ¼ inch notch is cut into a specified flipper, is used to identify egg-bearing lobster. Notched lobsters are then protected for several molting seasons, allowing them to reproduce for several years. 

McMahan was further found guilty of possessing lobster beyond minimum or maximum size in Owls Head Sept. 20, 2013, which resulted in a $3,600 fine.
