National Library Week April 10-16 at the Camden Public Library
CAMDEN — Visit the Camden Public Library during National Library Week 2016 and celebrate the life of the library and the life of the community. Transform your ideas about the library. The library staff will embrace a different book theme each day, the public is invited to come in and figure out the theme for the day.
The Camden Public Library has been serving the community in its present location since 1928. Today the library continues to evolve with a focus on education, community building activities, and technology. The library brings together people of all ages and across socioeconomic levels, building a strong and diverse community. The library is at the leading edge of technological connectivity, empowering students, young and old, to improve their skills and explore their world.
During National Library Week, the Camden Public Library joins libraries in schools, campuses, and communities nationwide in celebrating the dynamic changes that are happening in today's libraries. National Library Week is a time to highlight the changing role of libraries, librarians, and library workers. Libraries today are more about what they can do for and with library users, and not just what they have on the shelves. Libraries aren't only a place of quiet study, but also creative and engaging community centers where people can collaborate, learn how to use new technologies, or just relax.
"Service to the community has always been the focus of the library," said Library Director Nikki Maounis in a news release. "Libraries level the playing field for people of any age who are seeking the information and access to technologies that will improve their quality of life. While we believe that reading is, and always will be, an essential skill, there are many forms of literacy — for instance, the ability to understand and use technology is every bit as important as the ability to read well. Our mission is to ensure our community is literate in all the ways that count."
Libraries are many things to many people. They work with elected officials, small business owners, students, and the public at large to discover and address the needs of their communities. Whether through offering e-books and technology classes, materials for lifelong learners, programs for job seekers, or offering a safe haven in times of crisis, libraries and librarians listen to the community they serve, and they respond.
The Camden Public Library is celebrating National Library Week by celebrating the books and characters that readers love. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April.
Library hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday until 9 p.m.; and Sunday 1-5 p.m.
