Nathalie 'Nat' Barlow Witham, obituary
OWLS HEAD — Nathalie "Nat" Barlow Witham, 78, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her beloved home on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
Born on November 20, 1946, to Albert L. and Estelle Jackson Barlow, Nat grew up in Thomaston where she attended Georges Valley High School. A vibrant student, she was a cheerleader, member of the pep club and student senate, served on the yearbook committee, and was a Christmas Cabaret Queen candidate during her senior year. After graduating in 1965, she continued her education at Husson College.
From an early age, Nat demonstrated the strong work ethic that would define her life. At just eight years old, she began her first paying job delivering food trays to residents at the Lucette Home in Thomaston. Throughout high school, she held multiple jobs and earned her room and board at Husson by working as a live-in nanny for a local family. It was at Husson where fate brought her together with Eugene Witham, the love of her life. They married on July 1, 1967, and together built a beautiful life centered around their three children, Amy, Kimberly, and Christopher, and the cherished home they constructed in Owls Head, where they remained for the rest of their lives.
Nat built a distinguished career as a paralegal, beginning with Christy Adams before moving to work with Kurt Payson and other attorneys at Strout and Payson, PA. She concluded her professional journey working alongside James Strong, a high school classmate, before retiring in 2018.
A loving, compassionate, and spirited social butterfly, Nat brought joy wherever she went. She was an avid dancer who competed in numerous contests with her husband Eugene. Travel was another passion, creating treasured memories with friends and family in destinations like Eleuthera Island and Florida.
Nat was renowned as a gracious hostess, particularly famous for her elaborate Halloween parties featuring highly anticipated "couples costume" reveals—though all would fondly recall the year when three couples independently arrived dressed as Raggedy Ann and Andy. Her Christmas celebrations transformed their home into a winter wonderland, a labor of love that created magical memories for the annual Barlow Family Christmas Gatherings.
Perhaps nowhere was Nat happier than at the home she and Gene built on Metinic Island, their weekend sanctuary from Memorial Day through Labor Day for many cherished years. Her legendary annual "island parties" required year-round planning and featured unforgettable ‘pop-icon’ costume themes and spirited singing contests that became the stuff of family legend.
Above all, Nat's greatest joy was her role of ‘Mammie’ to her five grandchildren. She shared an unconditional, deeply loving bond with each of them, and they treasured every visit to Mammie and Bampie's house, where warmth, laughter, and love always awaited.
Nat's legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched with her generous spirit, infectious enthusiasm for life, and the beautiful family she and Eugene created together. Her memory will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know her vibrant, loving heart.
Nathalie was predeceased by her parents; her in-laws, Clayton and Jennie Witham; brothers-in-law, Elmer Witham, John Jackson; three life-long friends, Linda Emerson McCormick, Mary Lou Moore, Dianne Linscott; and someone she considered a daughter, Carol Beth VanDyne.
