MIT professor of Atmospheric Science to talk on Maine hurricanes, Oct. 3
The Camden Public Library will host another event in the Camden Talks Climate series cosponsored by the town of Camden and CamdenCAN (Climate Action Now) on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 6:30 p.m., in the Picker Room and via Zoom.
Dr. Kerry Emanuel, emeritus professor of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will present on the long and interesting history of hurricanes that have affected Maine, according to CPL, in a news release. Emanuel will also talk about recent scientific advances that show us how hurricane risk is changing in midcoast Maine, as well as destructive winter storms that have plagued us in recent times. This is a hybrid program and will take place both in-person and on Zoom.

Dr. Kerry Emanuel is the Cecil and Ida Green emeritus professor of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was on the faculty from 1981 to 2022. His specialty is hurricane physics and he was the first to investigate how long-term climate change might affect hurricane activity. Emanuel is the author or co-author of over 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers, and three books, including Divine Wind: The History and Science of Hurricanes, published by Oxford University Press and aimed at a general audience, and What We Know about Climate Change, published by the MIT Press and now in its third edition. He was a co-founder and co-director of MIT’s Lorenz Center, a climate think tank devoted to basic, curiosity-driven climate research.
