Maureen O. Richard, obituary
CAMDEN — Maureen Richard, 89, died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at Breakwater Commons in Rockland.
Maureen grew up in Vassalboro, Maine, alongside her sister, Betty, and brother, Larry. In a charming twist of fate, Maureen’s mother worked as a weaver in a mill alongside the mother of her future husband, Daniel. The two women were pregnant at the same time and delivered their babies just three days apart. Maureen and Dan grew up together, attending school and dating through their high school years. Maureen later attended nursing school in Lewiston, while Daniel attended teachers’ college in Gorham. They were married in 1956, and their careers eventually brought them to Camden in 1964.
Maureen served as a Registered Nurse at Camden Community Hospital for many years and later at PenBay Medical Center in Rockport. She was a devoted mother of four who balanced a full-time career with a bustling home life. She was a woman of many talents, sewing clothes, knitting, and cooking delicious meals all while leading a Brownie Troop, helping at ski races, and cheering at countless sporting events. Her home was always filled with life, including beloved dogs, cats, and various rescued wild creatures.
Maureen was known for opening her home to others. She hosted two exchange students from Spain and Sweden who became like sons to her, and she welcomed harp students during the summer months. Her basement was a frequent gathering spot where ski team members played pool, and she formed lasting bonds with many of her children’s friends.
An adventurous spirit, Maureen managed many family ski trips and travels to Canada and Florida. She visited her children in Utah, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska, and ventured abroad to Sweden, England, Ireland, and Scotland. Closer to home, she created lasting traditions for her family, including summer days at Lincolnville Beach and swimming in Lake Megunticook. Winters were defined by annual ski trips to Saddleback with a close-knit group of families.
Maureen is survived by her daughter Lisa and husband Christopher Donat of Fairbanks, Alaska; daughter Julie and husband Stephen Crane of Cushing; daughter Kelley Richard of Camden; and son, Todd and wife Sandra Richard of Farmington. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Eliza Simmonds and husband Jordan (and their son, Finn), Max Richard and fiancée Sophie, and Daniel Richard. Her legacy continues through several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren living in Maine, Alaska, Idaho, and Guam.
She leaves behind a long list of cherished friends, some with bonds spanning over fifty years. Together, they traveled, hunted for bargains, played bridge, and watched tennis.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to PALS for Living, the staff at Breakwater Commons, and the many friends who visited Maureen. They also wish to thank the Camden Police, Fire Department, and North East Mobile Health Services for their dedicated assistance.
A Remembrance Gathering will be held June 17, 2026, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the Camden Snow Bowl, 20 Barnestown Road, Camden.
