Marvin Bruce Stendel, obituary
Marvin Bruce Stendel of Mountain View, Arkansas passed away Thursday, August 4, 2022. He was born September 8, 1929, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Bruce L. Stendel and Florence R. Myers.
In 1948, Marvin married his beloved wife of 49 years, Charleen Parks. Together they had three children. They were longtime residents of Missouri, apart from traveling for 5 years during his AAA baseball career, eventually retiring to Mountain View, Arkansas in 1995.
Marvin was a 1947 graduate of Roosevelt High School in St. Louis Missouri. He was a four sports letterman in football, baseball (team captain), basketball (team captain), and track. Marvin received All-District in Football and Basketball, and Quarterback’s Club Award as a most outstanding linesman.
The summer following his high school graduation, he decided to forgo signing as a pitcher for the Cardinals and accepted a full football scholarship to the University of Arkansas. Marvin also played baseball for the Razorbacks and following their 1950 season, he left signing a contract with the Boston Red Sox.
He spent five years in their organization, climbing to the AAA level before a shoulder injury ended his career. In the meantime, he received his B.S. in Agriculture from the University of Arkansas in 1952. Following his baseball career, he spent 15 years as a Midwest Area Baseball Scout for the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, and San Francisco Giants.
Over the years Marvin was employed by Union Starch and Refining, Beck and Corbitt Steel, and the St. Louis Public Works Department, in which he retired as their building inspector. He was an athletic official for 30 years umpiring many baseball games as well as refereeing football and basketball in and around the St. Louis area and surrounding Missouri locations.
Marvin was a Hall of Fame Member of the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame, 1983; Greater St. Louis Major League Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame, 2005, and Roosevelt High School Hall of Fame, 2017. He was a Philadelphia Eagles Draftee out of the University of Arkansas.
The Stendels were frequent summer visitors to Midcoast Maine and attended Nativity Lutheran Church in Rockport. After his wife passed, Marv was looking for activities to get involved in. A good friend from his high school days convinced him to play in the basketball Senior Olympics, “Nothin but Net”. This consisted of three-on-three basketball tournaments. He played for several years in many locations as well as competing in the Nationals in Louisville.
Marvin was predeceased by his parents, Bruce and Florence Stendel; his wife of 49 years, Charleen Parks Stendel; two sons, Stephen C. Stendel, and Mark B. Stendel; and his sister, Shirley Stendel Tagnari.
He is survived by his daughter, Joan Stendel Batten of Mountain View, Arkansas; daughter-in-law Lewana Stendel of Spruce Head, Maine; his grandchildren Kyle Batten of Mountain View, Arkansas, Amy Stendel of Rockport, Maine, Angela Stendel of Rockland, Maine, Ben Stendel of Spruce Head, Maine, as well as Brian Stendel, Courtney Smith, and Felicia Collett all of St. Louis, Missouri; his great grandchildren Karly Robinson of Rockland, Maine, Nathan Coombs of Thomaston, Maine, and Brenton Smith, Ella Smith, and Tyler Hebisen all of St. Louis, Missouri; as well as nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Visitation at Roller Crouch Funeral Home was held Aug. 11, 2022, from 6-8 p.m., at 405 South Peabody Avenue, Mountain View, Arkansas 72560. Funeral services will be held at a later date.
