Knox man will serve four years, six months after stealing truck, trying to take police cruiser
BELFAST — A Knox man will spend four years six months in prison after being sentenced on charges across six separate cases in Waldo County Unified Court Feb. 10. All of the events took place between Dec. 25, 2021, and Jan. 28, 2022.
Joey A. Philbrook, 36, was sentenced for a total of 15 counts, including three counts of of unauthorized taking or transfer, one count of theft by receiving stolen property, two counts of criminal attempt, one count of burglary, four counts of violating a condition of release, two counts of operating after habitual offender revocation, one count of refusing to submit to arrest or detention resulting in physical injury, and one count of theft by deception.
The crimes range from receiving a knowingly stolen license plate, for which Philbrook was sentenced to 30 days in jail, to attempting to steal a police cruiser, for which he received 18 months in prison.
Philbrook’s longest sentence is for one count of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer in Brooks Jan. 1, 2022, when he stole a vehicle from a residence in Brooks.
Six of Philbrook’s charges come from a single incident that occurred the same day, Jan. 1, 2022. At the time, Philbrook was indicted on six counts, including burglary, theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, operating after habitual offender revocation, violating a condition of release, and attempted escape.
According to a March 17, indictment, Philbrook surreptitiously entered and remained in a dwelling with the intent to commit theft, something he accomplished by stealing the homeowners’ Toyota Tundra. For that theft Philbrook received a sentence of four years and six months in prison. His license was revoked at the time, and he was sentenced to two years in prison for operating after revocation. He has previously been charged with operating after revocation three times prior to the latest incident.
Philbrook was arrested for that offense, but reportedly attempted another auto theft, this time the police cruiser he was sitting in. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison for attempting to steal the cruiser.
Philbrook reportedly jumped into the cruiser’s driver seat while the engine was running, and placed his hands on the gearshift.
For an unrelated charge of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, Philbrook received 18 months in prison. This theft occurred when Philbrook stole a dirt bike with a value of over $1,000 in Troy Christmas day 2021.
On Jan. 27, 2022, Philbrook was again charged for operating after revocation in Unity Jan. 27, 2022.
Philbrook’s remaining theft charges are for shoplifting at various Waldo County stores.
