ROCKPORT — George's River Trout Unlimited (GRTU) welcomes Patrick Gallagher for a presentation on steelhead fishing, Monday, Dec. 11, 2023, upstairs in the fly shop at Maine Sport Outfitters, in Rockport. 

Gallagher grew up in northwestern Pennsylvania, in what is considered the heart of Great Lakes Steelhead Alley, and has been fishing for Great Lakes steelhead for nearly thirty years. His presentation aims to educate people on this great fishery that exists within a day’s drive of Maine during a time of year when our local angling options are limited.

Gallagher will provide an overview of the Great Lakes fisheries, discuss when steelhead make their spawning runs into the tributaries, and will cover where and when to fish tributaries for steelhead, with an overview of New York and Ohio and an emphasis on Pennsylvania waters. He will share know-how on gear, flies and techniques to successfully target steelhead, and will share tips to avoid crowds while still catching big fish.

Gallagher has a degree in wildlife and fisheries science. He has worked in the environmental education and international travel industries as well as being a fly fishing guide in the past. He has lived in several states throughout the country but now calls Camden home.

Trout Unlimited is a nonprofit organization with a mission dedicated to conserve, protect and restore North America's cold water fisheries and their watersheds.

The meeting will start at 6 p.m. with “Trout Talk,” an informal gathering for those who wish to visit before the presentation. Pizza is available for purchase by the slice. The formal meeting and featured presentation begin at 7 p.m. GRTU conducts a raffle directly following the speaker.
