Dec. 4 - Grand Hotel - 1932, NR, 112 minutes
At this fabulous place in Berlin where "nothing ever happens," a ballerina finds happiness with a baron's love, a business magnate pursues a beautiful and coy stenographer, and a sick man searches for his last hurrah. With Greta Garbo, John Barrymore, Lionel Barrymore, Joan Crawford and Wallace Beery. This is Garbo’s only film with John Barrymore. Winner of the 1932 Academy Award for Best Picture
Dec. 11 - Queen Christina - 1933, NR, 93 minutes
Hollywood icon Greta Garbo puts her ambisexual persona to good use in this portrait of Sweden's Queen Christina, a cross-dressing 17th century monarch who felt more comfortable in men's clothing than in the frilly finery of females. John Gilbert (who previously co-starred with Garbo in a string of silent films) appears as Antonio, the queen's love interest, in one of his final film roles before his death in 1936. This is considered Garbo’s best film; Erika says this is truly wonderful.
Dec. 18 - Anna Karenina - 1935, NR, 95 minutes
This rendering of author Leo Tolstoy's classic stars Greta Garbo as the married Russian woman who falls in love and runs off with dashing soldier Vronsky (Fredric March). Upon Anna's return, her icy and distant husband (Basil Rathbone) prevents her from seeing her son (Freddie Bartholomew). To make matters worse, Vronsky deserts her to join a regiment heading to the Turkish-Serbian war. Garbo is unforgettable. Her final scene is haunting.
