Elizabeth Cummons; May’s visual and performing arts student of the month
ROCKPORT — Camden Hills Regional High School senior Elizabeth Cummons has been recognized by the school’s Visual & Performing Arts Department as Student of the Month for May. Described as a very natural and diverse musician, Cummons has been involved in nearly every aspect of the CHRHS music program.
Cummons comes from a very musical family and began singing publicly at the age of 3 or 4. During this time, she performed solos at the community Grange Hall in Lincolnville and sang with her family’s band, comprised of a mandolin, guitar, fiddle and drums. The influence that she received from her family helped to promote her desire to continue her study of music throughout high school, according to school officials in a news release.
As a freshman, she became involved in the school musical, West Side Story. This experience inspired her to pursue roles in other musicals, as well as the one-act plays. Her vocal endeavors included membership in Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and Women’s Choir. As a result of her vocal talents, she has also earned positions in the District III Honors Choir for three years.
Her instrumental music quests began with the study of flute, and continued into her freshman year when she enrolled in the CHRHS Concert Band. She later learned the alto saxophone and became a member of the CHRHS Jazz Band. During the summer before her senior year, she learned the bass trombone and performed that instrument in both the Concert and Jazz bands.
Next year, Cummons will be attending St. Joseph’s College of Maine as a nursing major. While in college, she plans to continue to be involved in music. Following her collegiate studies, she hopes to travel and use her nursing skills to benefit others, along with providing enrichment with the arts.
Her advice to other students who are considering involvement with the arts: “The visual and performing arts are so important to become involved with. Even if you are not musical, there are so many other avenues to pursue. The arts have allowed me to branch out and meet new people, as well as express myself. The arts will always be an important part of my life.”
