Craignair Gallery Exhibits ‘Maine Essence’ by Sally Loughridge
SPRUCE HEAD –The Craignair Gallery invites the public to the opening reception of Maine Essence by South Bristol artist, Sally Loughridge, 4 to 7 p.m. June 21.
Loughridge has been interpreting the Midcoast in both oil and soft pastel mediums for over 24 years. Her compositions explore the juxtaposition of the colors, textures, values and temperatures she observes in the surrounding natural elements.
For the artist, Maine’s natural essence has two meanings: the enduring physical elements that characterize Maine, including its ragged coast, varied bedrock, teeming waters, and numerous islands as well as its transitory elements, including tidal rhythms and ever-changing weather.
Painting has also provided Loughridge a restorative process as she confronted serious health issues in the last ten years. “The process of painting is humbling and deeply satisfying. I hope to stir the viewer's memory, feeling, curiosity, and commitment to respecting the natural world,” she explains. “In this age of technology and screens, I particularly hope that art can help children and youth embrace the Earth's beauty and abundance.”
Maine Essence is on exhibit June 21- July 18 at the Craignair Gallery, 5 Third Street in Spruce Head. The gallery is open daily. For more information, contact innkeeper@craignair.com or visit www.craignair.com/gallery.
