Charles Fisher, obituary
ROCKLAND — Charles F. Fisher, 99, longtime resident of Newark and Florham Park, N.J., and Manchester, Vt., died peacefully March 6, 2013, at the Homestead in Owls Head.
Charles Francis Fisher, was born in Pellerd, Hungary on the estate of Count Brazalee April 20, 1913. He immigrated to America in 1921with his parents, Emery and Elvira Fisher, and his sisters Irene and Helen and brothers Emery and Henry.
He received his early education in Newark and his Bachelor of Science in education at Newark State Teacher's College, a master's degree at Columbia University, and a Doctorage of Education at UCLA, Westwood, Calf.
He married the love of his life, Laurel Elizabeth Raab, of Pasadena, Calif., Dec. 11, 1943 at the Church of the Angels. Charles served in the Army during World War II in the South Pacific. He taught art at East Side High School in Newark, and also fine arts and art history at the Newark College of Engineering. He was a member of the Newark Teacher's Union and Tuscarora Canoe Club in Belleville, N.J.. He coached tennis and led camping and canoeing trips for teenagers at Lake George, N.Y., and Boy Scout trips to Philmont, N.M.
Charles paddled the Danube River from its source to Budapest, Hungary; the Intracoastal Waterway from Newark, N.J., to Miami, Fl., and enjoyed numerous kayaking trips to Canada. He loved the outdoors, and as an "AT End-To-Ender" he hiked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine after retiring from teaching. He also hiked portions of the Pacific Crest Trail and the trails of England. Charles was an avid opera and concert-goer, as well as an accomplished photographer.
Most recently, Charles lived in Rockland, where he enjoyed painting and sketching, and won a number of blue ribbons at local art fairs and shows. Many of his works proudly adorn the walls of family members and friends. He was a communicant of St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church in Rockland.
Predeceased by his parents, siblings and his wife, Mr. Fisher is survived by his sons, Charles Fisher and his wife, Eleanor, of Gillette, N.J., and William Fisher and his wife, Barbara, of Westfield, N.J.; his grandchildren, Ella, Ethan, Kim, Derek, Caroline, and Christine; his great-grandchildren, Braeden, Colin, Declan, Riley and Evan; his nephews, Emery III, George, John, Michael, and Jonathan; his nieces, Ilona, Barbara, Suzanne, Elaine, Alexis, Cathy, Christina, Candy and Cindy; and close friends, the Moro family of Rockport.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, March 11, at 10 a.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church 150 Broadway in Rockland. He will be buried next to his wife, Laurel, at Factory Point Cemetery in Manchester, Vt.
