Belfast police led on high speed chase
BELFAST — Michael B. Libby, of Columbia Falls, was behind bars Oct. 15 after Belfast Police chased his vehicle at speeds that allegedly reached 80 miles per hour on Swan Lake Avenue, Oct. 13. Libby’s wife and two month-old child were also in the car.
The incident began while police were responding to a call of a domestic disturbance on Patterson Hill Road in Belfast around 2:30 pm. Officer Mike Rolerson, of the Belfast Police Department, responded to the call, where he encountered a vehicle he’d been looking for on the road, according to Detective Bryan Cunningham of the Belfast Police Department.
When Rolerson began to pursue the vehicle the driver allegedly attempted to elude the officer by speeding onto Swan Lake Avenue. During the pursuit, Libby’s vehicle passed another vehicle on the right, a maneuver that nearly caused his vehicle to go off the road, according to Belfast Police. Libby also sideswiped another vehicle while passing Holmes’ Greenhouse, police said.
The pursuit continued, with Libby traveling onto the Back Searsport Road, where he eventually pulled into a driveway before driving into a wooded area, according to Detective Cunningham. Eventually Libby allegedly attempted to flee on foot further into the woods.
Libby was captured with the combined efforts of Officer Merl Reed, of the Searsport Police Department, and Officer Rolerson and Sergeant James Greeley, of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office. Libby was found in Kinney’s Mobile Home Park in Searsport, according to Belfast Police.
Libby was charged with refusing to submit to arrest or detention, eluding an officer, criminal mischief, aggravated driving to endanger, criminal speeding, endangering the welfare of a child, aggravated operating after revocation and operating under the influence.
Libby was taken to Waldo County Jail with a $5,000 cash bail set.
