Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition to host several nature outings, programs in Oct. 2023
BELFAST — The Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition will host several nature outings and programs in October, including co-sponsoring a special multimedia performance with Halcyon in Belfast. All outings and programs are free and open to the public.
BBWC has provided the following information:
Saturday, October 14, at 10 a.m., at City Point in Belfast. Hike the Hills to Sea Trail from City Point Train Station in Belfast to Rt. 137 in Waldo. Participants will meet at the train station at 10am and should bring water, lunch, rain gear. This is a 4-mile hike; sturdy footwear is recommended. Binoculars are optional. Thursday, October 19, at 7p.m., at the Belfast Boathouse. BBWC is a co-sponsor for a special multimedia performance combining live music, imagery, science and spoken word to explore the impact of climate change in Waldo County. Presented in collaboration with Halcyon, the Waldo County Conservation Initiative, and ecologist Janet McMahon. Sponsored by Coastal Mountains Land Trust, the City of Belfast, Belfast Community Co-op, Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition, and Waterfall Arts. For more information, please visit coastalmountains.org.
Thursday, October 26, at 6:30 p.m., at the Belfast Free Library. Kelp Farming and Related Projects from the Belfast Area High School and BCOPE Marine Institute with Dave Thomas and BAHS Faculty and Students. The Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition invites you to join us to hear teachers and students from RSU 71 describe the newly formed Belfast Marine Institute, an initiative born out of state-funded grants and community support. Several Marine Institute projects will be described including a licensed kelp farm, field trips, certification and internship opportunities for students, and technology and equipment currently used by students to conduct marine-related research and monitoring. David Thomas has taught high school science in four public high schools in New York, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Maine for over 20 years. He holds a B.S. in limnology (the study of biological, chemical, and physical features of lakes and rivers) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an M.S. in science education from Cornell University. He currently serves on the BBWC Board.
