Applicants sought for Belfast Garden Club scholarships
BELFAST — The Belfast Garden Club has $2,000 in scholarships ready to award to future conservationists, horticulturists and farmers.
Scholarships of $1,000 will be given to two graduating high school seniors or college undergraduates from Waldo County who are pursuing studies in ecology, sustainable agriculture or related fields.
Last year's recipients were Zachary Beaudry of Searsport, who's studying wildlife ecology at UMaine Orono, and Caleb Lord of Winterport, also at UMaine Orono, where he's majoring in ecology and environmental sciences.
Founded in 1929, the Belfast Garden Club has promoted the beautification of Belfast through educational talks, garden tours, the annual Plant Sale in May, donations of books to local libraries, and scholarships. The club maintains ten public gardens at Post Office
Square, Belfast Free Library and elsewhere in town.
Students may contact their high school guidance office or Scholarship Committee Chair Ginny Hodge at BelfastGardenClub@gmail.com, visit BelfastGardenClub.org, or write to Belfast Garden Club, P.O. Box 987, Belfast, ME 04915. Applications must be submitted by May 31.
