Maine’s COVID-19 death toll increases by 41: six over last 48 hours, 35 over the past month
AUGUSTA — The Maine CDC has announced, Jan. 8, an additional 41 COVID-19 deaths in the state, bringing the state’s COVID-19 death toll to 426.
In the Jan. 8 briefing, Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah explained the sudden spike in numbers is due to additional epidemiological analysis by the CDC of death certificates over the past month.
Of the newly announced deaths, only six occurred over the last 48 hours, while the other 35 occurred over the month of December.

Labor officials provide unemployment benefits update, roll out $300 federal benefit
AUGUSTA — For the week ending January 2, the Maine Department of Labor recorded about 3,900 initial claims filed for state unemployment insurance, and 250 initial claims filed for federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA).
In total, approximately 4,300 people were filing an initial claim or reopening their unemployment claim.
About 15,400 weekly certifications, or continued claims, were filed last week for state unemployment, with another 16,000 weekly certifications… Read more
Maine’s COVID-19 death toll increases by 13
AUGUSTA — The Maine CDC has announced, Jan. 7, an additional 13 COVID-19 deaths in the state, bringing the state’s COVID-19 death toll to 385.
