MIDCOAST — Congratulations! Right now, approximately 76,000 Maine residents have health insurance through the federal Affordable Care Act. Many of them are fishermen and their family members who never had health insurance before. But what good is that insurance if you don't have a doctor who you see on a regular basis, who knows you and can help you stay healthy?

Everyone needs a Primary Care Provider (PCP), whether that person is a doctor, physician's assistant, or practical nurse. Finding a PCP is one of the most important steps you can take after signing up for health insurance and the Maine Lobstermen's Association (MLA) can help you locate the right PCP for you. The MLA, Maine's oldest fishermen's organization, has trained Health Insurance Navigators on staff. These professionals know the ins and outs of the health insurance plans offered through the Maine Health Insurance Marketplace (Community Health Options and Harvard Pilgrim) and can assist you in "navigating" your way toward the right PCP for you.

Having a PCP who is familiar with you through regular check-ups means he or she can more readily evaluate you in case something goes wrong, like a persistent cough, sudden changes in weight or mood, or the onset of diabetes or other chronic diseases. Don't wait until you get sick to find a PCP.
