Permaculture class on Hurricane Island
The Hurricane Island Foundation (HIF) and Midcoast Permaculture Design said they will offer a two-day Introduction to permaculture course on Hurricane Island this spring. Using Hurricane Island as teaching space, this course will provide a first-hand understanding of permaculture design with Jesse Watson, of Midcoast Permaculture Design, and participants will gain a foundation for designing their home gardens and farms for resilience and sustainability.
Permaculture is a design methodology that incorporates aspects of agriculture, landscape design, ecology, appropriate technology and systems thinking. It is a thinking tool and process that allows us to design resilient and sustainable human habitats modeled on patterns that we see emerge in natural systems. It is often applied to the home garden system to design edible landscapes that behave similar to wild ecosystems. At the farm scale, permaculture is used to design agroforestry or agro-ecology systems that incorporate annual, perennial and animal production systems. It is a synthesis of wise human behavior taken from both modern and ancient sources of inspiration.
The Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership provides programs that expose people to science as a passion and a profession, and inspire them to imagine how to live in the world in a more holistic manner. The Island itself is a living laboratory where participants can immerse themselves in the woods and waters while becoming members of a sustainable, off-the-grid community. Programs teach various aspects of physical science and promote the value of collaborative learning while helping students build confidence in their own abilities.
This course will be facilitated in a manner that values the expertise of the participants and engages all styles of learning by appealing to the eyes, the ears and the hands. It will be a mix of lecture, group discussion, video and hands-on projects in the field. Participants will leave with a strong foundation, being able to apply permaculture design to their situations and projects. Participants will have the benefit of learning about ecological design in a collaborative environment face to face with peers of practitioners. People will leave this course with a strong sense of how to apply permaculture principles and techniques to their home gardens or farms, and this course will help to quell that overwhelming feeling of not knowing where to start.
Topics include:
Designing for Resilience & Sustainability
