North Haven high schoolers get spooky with lobster trap maze
Lobster traps are useful for a variety of purposes. They are a working tool for hundreds of Maine lobster fishermen; a lawn decoration for folks from away, or a base for a coffee table on the outside deck. But for the students of North Haven Community School on North Haven Island they have become part of a high school Halloween event created to trick and scare the younger school students this Halloween.
Using their math, computer, and design skills the high school students, all 15 of them, have created an indoor maze using approximately 140 traps laid out in an indoor common room for the middle and elementary school students to wander thru and perhaps exit successfully with treat in hand.
After the student council came up with the idea of the maze using the traps, creating the maze was handed to the students in a ninth grade mathematics class. After preliminary designs and measurements were completed some computer students created a 3-D maze design using the “Sketch-Up” program. The heavy lifting and lugging of traps to school and into school was a group effort by all the high school students and the scary finishing touches are being worked on this weekend before this old holiday is once again celebrated by one and all on North Haven.
