The Fourth program in the Noon Music in Lent Series
CAMDEN — At noon, Friday, March 4 in the sanctuary of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, Howard Walen will play a program of organ music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Friderick Handel, Robert J. Powell and Everett Titcomb.
Mr. Walen earned a B.A. from Bates College and an M.Ed. At Northeastern University. He served in local schools as both teacher and administrator. Concurrently, Mr. Walen held church music positions as organist and/or choirmaster in Congregational, Methodist and Episcopal Churches. He has also composed service music and hymns for the choirs he directed.
St. Thomas' 53 rank Schantz pipe organ was installed in 1993 and a dedicatory recital was played by John Weaver.
The Noon Music in Lent Series was conceived nine years ago by Jane Schroeder, Minister of Music at St. Thomas'. On the six Fridays in Lent, performers donate their talent and time to perform from 12-12:30 p.m. This is followed by a homemade soup, bread and fruit lunch in the SunRoom.
The programs are free and open to all. Free-will offerings are given to local groups such as The Knox County Homeless Coalition, Help Heat Homes, Camden Area Christian Food Pantry and Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice and Home Care.
St. Thomas Church is located at 33 Chestnut Street in downtown Camden. A handicap-accessible entrance with adjacent parking is located around the corner on Wood Street.
