Crews attempt to salvage fishing boat aground in Rockland Harbor
The Coast Guard is responding to the grounding of a vessel in the vicinity of Jameson Point near the Rockland Breakwater in Rockland. Sunday evening, Nov. 1, the fish tender Rockland Gulf broke free of its mooring and grounded in the muddy area inside the Rockland Breakwater.
In an effort to reduce the pollution risk, the owner of the vessel plugged the fuel vents and the Coast Guard verified that the hull of the vessel was intact.
This afternoon, with oversight from the Coast Guard, Maine Department of Environmental Protection, the Rockland Harbormaster and Maine Marine Patrol, the owner unsuccessfully attempted to salvage the vessel on three separate occasions.
Under the supervision of local officials and representatives from both the DEP and the Coast Guard, the owner will remove all oil and hazardous materials tomorrow morning, Nov. 3, during low tide. Once the potential pollutants are removed, the owner will work with local officials to determine a course of action to safely remove the vessel.
There has been no discharge of pollution.
