High winds tonight could cause downed limbs, wires from Port Clyde to Winterport
GRAY — The National Weather Service in Gray has issued a gale warning for the coast, from Stonington to Port Clyde, out 25 nautical miles into Penobscot Bay. The gale warning is in effect from 8 p.m. Wednesday through noon Thursday, Oct. 29.
Winds from the southeast will be 20 to 30 knots, with gusts up to 45 knots and seas of 11 to 16 feet.
Inland, strong winds are expected late tonight into Thursday morning. A few gusts higher than 45 mph are possible, particularly along the immediate coastline and in elevated terrain.
A wind advisory is in effect, also from 8 p.m. Wednesday through noon Thursday, for interior and coastal Waldo and Knox counties, including the communities of Winterport, Unity, Camden, Rockland, Thomaston, Belfast and Lincolnville, among others.
In those areas, winds will be from the southeast at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph.
There is the possibility of downed trees, limbs and wires, with the potential for power outages. Driving could also become hazardous for high-profile vehicles due to strong cross winds, according to the NWS.
Knox County Emergency Management Agency Director Ray Sisk reminds people that all downed wires should be considered live, and to call 911 to report emergencies.
