Barbara Dyer: Another New Year
The ball dropped in Times Square and we are into another New Year. I do not know when the celebration first started but it comes every year. Most people make and shortly break a resolution or two. It becomes easier, after a while, not to make them in the first place.
The weather is not cooperating yet for a nice new year, but we have so many things on the coast of Maine for which to be thankful. First of all, we got to see another year.
We are all thankful for our family and good friends.
The weather is so much better than any other place in the world, without mudslides, tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanos and unexpected heat or cold. We live in a perfect place, down by the sea.
In a previous generation, everyone thought of Guy Lombardo’s orchestra as the celebration of New Year’s Eve.
I had the pleasure of dancing to his music in Waterville. It was not New Year’s Eve, but one of the hottest nights of the year. He played anyway and the crowd danced the night away, forgetting how uncomfortable the heat was.
He always played in a ballroom on New Year’s Eve and it was televised, so people looked forward to that for their celebration.
Next, I have a hint for postcard collectors, as the old ones shown here. A New Year’s postcard that is postmarked January 1 is more valuable than any others.
The one card shown here that is not New Year’s, is just a reminder not to make that your Resolution for the year.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL, and enjoy every day of 2015, no matter what, as there is always something good if you just look for it.
Barbara F. Dyer has lived in Camden all of her life, so far.
