Knox Museum to hold Flag Day Community Celebration, June 14
THOMASTON — On Friday, June 14, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., the historic Knox Museum will present a Flag Day Community Celebration. Located at 30 High Street, Thomaston, the Knox Museum offers free admission during open hours on June 14.
Among the offerings will be guided tours, create your own flag activity for kids, cookies and punch, and the Field of Flags display outside the Museum. Thomaston’s Calvary Banner will be on display inside the Museum.
All are welcome.
Flag Day activities culminate with a slide talk, Discover the Mystery of Mill Creek Village: Lost and Found, at Watts Hall, located at 174 Main St., Thomaston. The slide talk is a ticketed event through Watts Hall Community Arts.
Knox Museum and Watts Hall Community Arts will host the intriguing exploration into the vanished world of Mill Creek Village, also known as Mill River Village, which once thrived in the early days of Thomaston, serving not only the town itself but also East Thomaston (Rockland) and South Thomaston. Yet, despite its significance, the village has largely disappeared from modern landscapes, leaving behind only whispers of its former glory.
Local resident and historian Peggy McCrea will lead the presentation, drawing from years of meticulous research into early deeds, census reports, and historical records.
“McCrea’s investigation paints a vivid picture of this bustling town center, which flourished from 1800 to about 1850, rivaling in size renowned historical sites like Old Sturbridge Village,” said Knox Museum, in a news release.
Attendees will be treated to a three-dimensional diorama illustrating the likely appearance of Mill Creek Village, accompanied by a slide talk elucidating its settlement and subsequent disappearance. Over the course of a century, factories, mills, a dam, mill pond, church, school, and a bustling avenue lined with professional offices and merchant shops vanished, leaving only five buildings standing today. Can you guess which ones?
Tickets for this journey into Thomaston’s past are priced at $15 for adults and $5 for children and students. Advance tickets are available online at wattshallcommunityarts.com, while on-site purchases can be made with cash, card, or local check. A reception will be held in the boardroom following the presentation.
Flag Day Community Celebration is a collaboration between Knox Museum, the Town of Thomaston, Watts Hall Community Arts, Thomaston Garden Club, and downtown merchants.
