BELFAST — Belfast Senior College’s Board of Directors elected a slate of officers and members at its annual meeting, Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, at the Belfast Boat House. With a full house of over 75 members and friends in attendance, Mayo Bulloch was elected to become the next Senior College president, and Martha Laitin and Samantha Causon have been re-elected as vice-president and treasurer, respectively. Nancy Perkins, who has just completed her term as president, was elected secretary of the Board of Directors.

New Board members for 2023-2024 are Trudy Miller, Karen Gleeson, and Van Bankston. Continuing members are Doug Chamberlin, Ron Jarvella, Monica Morris, Denise Pendleton, Samantha Causon and Mike Ray.

Incoming president Mayo Bulloch said, “Belfast Senior College wants to thank outgoing Board members Marjorie Arnett, Deirdre Good, Elizabeth Sterner and Jim Owen. It is impossible to say how much their yeoman service has meant during the COVID-19 pandemic, the loss of Hutchinson Center and the renewal and expansion of activities in this 30th anniversary programming year.”

Bulloch added that two Board seats remain open, and people interested in finding out more about those positions can get in touch with the Board through the belfastseniorcollege.org website.

Bulloch also expressed delight at the success of the annual meeting.

“The Boat House was filled with people who came out to support Senior College, enjoy the delicious continental breakfast, and hear reports from Board members on finances, operations, and more,” said Bulloch. “This was a testament to the belief in lifelong learning that remains strong in Waldo County. The Board is grateful to Kristin Frangoulis and Fred Bowers, Senior College faculty, who spoke about the value of the program, building friendships and our brains. And the Board thanks Senator Chip Curry, a long-time supporter of education in Waldo County and the state, who closed the meeting with an affirmation of the importance of lifelong learning to individuals and the community.”

The Belfast Senior College fall semester continues with one-session, four-session and seven-session courses in October. Classes are available at four Belfast sites and on Zoom.

Belfast Senior College is an independent all-volunteer non-profit organization, now celebrating 30 years of programming. For the price of a $25 membership, valid through August 2024, Senior College offers year-round courses and events to provide stimulation, knowledge, social interaction and fun for people age 50 and up. Members’ spouses and partners of any age also are welcome to become members. Fall semester Class fees are $15 for each one-session course, $20 for the four-session course and $40 for the seven-session Zoom course.
