CAMDEN — Bertha “Brownie” Brown, 97, went home to be with the Lord on February 24, 2022 to be reunited with her beloved husband, Ralph. Born August 27, 1924 in Agawam, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of George and Mae Schmidt. On February 8, 1947, she married Ralph E. Brown.
Brownie received her nursing degree at Holyoke School of Nursing in Holyoke, Massachusetts, in 1947, and worked for many years doing private duty nursing including several hospitals in Keene, New Hampshire and in Midcoast Maine. She was affectionately known as “Brownie” by all who knew her, not just because of her last name, but possibly her 4-foot, 10-inch stature, and energizer bunny personality.
Brownie was a dynamite nurse and took care of scores of patients over the years. She was, and still is, a bright and shining star. Her family often joked that people should fasten their seatbelts when she entered the room. Heaven will never be the same. Ninety-seven years young, Brownie will truly be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Her family appreciates the wonderful caregivers at Windward Gardens for their compassionate loving care during her stay there.
In the 1970s, the Browns moved from Keene to Maine where Ralph served as pastor of the Norway Baptist Church for several years. Later they moved to Camden to be near their daughter and son-in-law. She was a member of the West Rockport Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Ralph E. Brown, who died on March 1, 2015; brother George, and sisters Doris and Carol.
Surviving is her daughter, Karen Clark and her husband, Phil, of Camden; granddaughters, Kristi Clark Alling, and Lisa Clark Kennedy; three great-granddaughters, Cami Alling, Jasmine and Acacia Kennedy; sisters Sonja Smith and Bobbie Candage. She enjoyed bantering with the husbands of her granddaughters, Scott and Ted.
Calling hours will be held 2-4 p.m., Tuesday, March 1, 2021 at the Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain Street, Camden.
A graveside service will be announced in the spring.
