Rockland City Council chooses its 2022 mayor, gets straight to business

ROCKLAND — Filling the seats of Rockland’s City Council for the 2022 electoral year are a Harbor Trail Committee member, a founder and manager of a workspace collaborative, a Maine Maritime Academy grad, and a volunteer with MacDougal Community Garden, One Less Worry, and Parks and Recreation.
Through the year, these Council members will be led by a former Harbor Master, who once owned his own windjammer.
As newcomer Nicole Kalloch, an MMA grad with a degree in international business and statistics, becomes familiar with her seat upon the dais, Ed Glaser takes back the gavel for the second year in a row. Glaser garnered three votes during Council’s Monday, Nov. 15, 2021 silent vote; Councilor Louise MacLellan-Ruf received the other two.
No speeches followed, and after the clicks and snaps of cameras faded, Council dove back into business.
Though the evening’s agenda was to swear in the newest council member, and for members to choose who among them would take the mayoral position, Councilors took the opportunity to vote on a conditional 30-day permit for the Trade Winds lodging facility. Council had recently denied the Trade Winds’ permit due to unresolved issues addressed by the fire chief. However, the chief, Chris Whytock, told Council during this evening’s meeting that he would be meeting with the lodging establishment the next morning, Nov. 16, and that none of the issues were deemed “egregious” or a threat to safety.
