Sundog Outdoor Leadership Initiative announces 'wintry mix' for 2025
The Camden based non-profit Sundog Outdoor Leadership Initiative will be offering two “Wintery Mix” programs that weave winter activities into team building, group dynamics, and their Sundog character curriculum for Knox and Waldo county youth.
The first offering is a winter break week-long program during February break (Feb 17-20, 22) which meets for 2.5 hours over four weekly sessions and culminates in an extended Saturday “expedition”. This program will include cross country skiing, ice fishing, snow shoeing, ice skating, and winter camp craft and is for 4th-6th graders.
The second program runs for five weeks (last week of February to the last week of March) and meets twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 2.5 hours after school and culminates in an overnight weekend expedition to the Megunticook Ski Cabin in Camden Hills State Park. This program also includes country skiing, ice fishing, snow shoeing, ice skating, and winter camp craft, in addition to winter hiking, shelter building, and a service day. As with the week-long program, all of the above will be infused with team building initiatives, group games, and reflection.
Small group sizes allow for a great instructor to student ratio, team bonding, meeting new friends, and getting out and active regardless of the weather and helps keep us regulated and energized during the colder, darker months here in Midcoast Maine.
These programs will both be guided by Maine Sport Outfitters guides who are well-versed in these various activities along with other skills such as winter ecology, birding and animal tracking, winter survival, and other skills necessary for staying safe and having fun outdoors in the Maine winter.
