Opportunity to teach public about proper and safer bicycle riding
There is absolutely no excuse for any driver to run from an accident and I hope the police can track that person down. [Read: Woman injured in Belfast hit and run released from hospital]
BUT, here is an opportunity for the Pilot to teach the public about proper and safer bicycle riding. The woman hit was riding on the wrong side of the road, always dangerous but particularly so after dark . All riders should be riding with traffic. Walkers should be walk facing traffic.
I have no idea of what she was wearing. Did she have light colored clothing on? Hopefully it was reflective. Did her bike have proper lights ? All of these things might have prevented the accident.
Here is an opportunity for the Pilot to add some very simple proper “rules of the road” to every appropriate article as a reminder to everyone who reads it.
The same type of thing could be said of photos that you show of boaters not wearing life jackets . Point out that life jackets should be worn at all times when out on the water. This is particularly true in small boats such as kayaks, canoes, rowboats, etc . Once you are thrown into the water it is almost impossible to put your life jacket on - if you can find it!
