Open letter to Nordic Aquafarms
Your plan to build a massive industrial fish factory here in Belfast has created a tremendous upset in our community.
As far as I am concerned, you came to the state of Maine to take advantage of our abundant fresh water, antiquated water laws and our access to the ocean to expand and enrich your for-profit company. The well-being of the the eco-system here in the mid-coast area is of little interest to you as you forge ahead with this plan; this experiment to raise a "commodity" fish on land.
Belfast City Councilors were in no way prepared to understand or take a responsible and educated position on your plan. With your corporate reach and manipulations, you made easy work of expediting the process of zoning change and comprehensive plan changes even though this was an illegal process for the City Council to follow.
Your proposed factory will destroy the land, the trees, the wildlife and the add more pollution to an already compromised ocean.
We all share the planet. The water, the air, the land.
In my humble opinion, the NAF proposal for Belfast is a dangerous and destructive plan that has nothing to do with sustainability, let alone regenerative and true farming practices.
I stand with the earth.
