Meeting spaces top warrant at upcoming Montville special town meeting
MONTVILLE - An inspection by the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office earlier this year set the stage for an upcoming special town meeting, Sept. 28, at which residents will be asked to consider the future of three municipal buildings.
Selectmen are expected to sign the warrant for the town meeting on Tuesday night, but a notice from the town on Monday said residents would be asked to consider plans to renovate the Montvile Town House, allowing non-municipal uses of the Town Office meeting room, and whether to sell, donate or repair the Community Center.
As of Sept. 16, renovation plans for the Town House were not available.
The building has traditionally been the site of the annual town meeting until this year when selectmen closed the Town House and the adjacent Community Center (also known as the Union Harvest Grange Hall) after an inspector from the Fire Marshal’s Office found violations in both buildings.
With the closing of the Town House, the annual town meeting was held at Walker Elementary School in Liberty.
The Community Center, Thompson said, was previously one of the only spaces available to residents for non-municipal meetings or events. The closing of the building led town officials to consider opening the Town Office meeting room to outside groups for the first time.
A separate article will address what to do with the Community Center.
Voters will also weigh in on proposed changes to transfer station sticker fees, and amendments to the town’s subdivision ordinance.
Montville currently charges $1.50 per bag, up to 35 gallons. Thompson said the question at the town meeting would be whether to charge less for smaller bags and more for larger ones.
Thompson said the subdivision ordinance amendments were brought forward by the town’s code enforcement officer. The proposed changes, she said, are not related to a current building proposal.
The special town meeting will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. at the Montville Town House, 418 Center Road.
