Hurricane Island Outward Bound School welcomes new admissions director
Hurricane Island Outward Bound School (HIOBS), an organization that focuses on experiential learning through outdoor expeditions, has announced Andy Colby as the new Director of Admissions.
Previously, Colby served in student admissions, academic/career advising, and for the last seven years as University Registrar at the University of New Hampshire. Along with his experience in advising, Colby brings with him an interest in experiential education.
He states, in a HIOBS news release: “A college semester abroad program in Nepal in 1989 structured around experiential education changed my life and led to a graduate program in teaching secondary education and a 30-year career in higher education....”
As a school specializing in expeditionary learning through sailing, backpacking, and canoeing courses, emphasis is put on hiring administrative staff who wholeheartedly believe in the mission of Outward Bound, and understand the impact these life-changing experiences have on those who take a course.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Andy to the team,” said Eric Denny, executive director. “His experience working in the world of academics, paired with his interest in experiential learning, make him the perfect fit for the Director of Admissions at HIOBS.”
As of late January, Colby has moved from New Hampshire and begun working at the organization.
“I am thankful for the opportunity to join Hurricane Island Outward Bound School, and thrilled to work with a community dedicated to helping people have meaningful experiential educational opportunities,” he said. “I look forward to working with the students, families, alumni, and staff of the HIOBS and the OBUSA communities.”
Colby and his family have spent many years visiting Maine. He and his wife enjoy hiking, sailing, kayaking, and cycling, and are excited to continue their outdoor adventures on the coast.
