Concern grows after two small fires extinguished in Thomaston within 30 minutes
THOMASTON — Almost 30 minutes after Thomaston FD was called to a small grass fire behind Flagship Cinema, on New County Road, Oct. 24, 2024, firefighters and police were called to another property down the street for what turned out to be some hay on fire behind a vacant building.
Both fires were extinguished almost immediately, but lingering concerns over the timing and proximity have created some unease.
The first fire, which Thomaston police and fire departments were alerted to at 6:20 p.m., appeared to be spreading into the woods line by the time firefighters arrived on scene. Because of the connection to forestry and wildlands, the Maine Warden Service received a phone call regarding the fire. Thirty minutes later, at 6:50 p.m., when a report came in of a possible structure fire down the road at 212 New County Road, responding firefighters opted to contact the Fire Marshal’s Office, despite the fact that only hay had burned.
