Coast Guard tows disabled trawler into Rockland
ROCKLAND — A crew from the U.S. Coast Guard Station Rockland successfully towed the Julie Ann, a 38-foot trawler, to Rockland from the waters of West Penobscot Bay late this afternoon.
The trawler's engine had quit, said U.S. Coast Guard Command Duty Officer Rob Childress, who is based in the Coast Guard's Sector New England's South Portland office.
The Julie Ann, whose homeport is Tenants Harbor, apparently lost coolant, he said. The boat had one person on board, who was unable to anchor the vessel. The boat drifted for a while, and the U.S. Coast Guard broadcast a marine alert to other vessels in the immediate area off of Owls Head.
"It was a benign situation," said Childress.
The Rockland Coast Guard station responded with a 47-foot lifeboat.
As of Thursday late afternoon, there was a light west wind at 10 to 15 knots, with seas at two to three feet. The temperature was about 15 degrees.
