Betty B. (Stone) York, obituary
BELFAST — Betty B. (Stone) York, 79, widow of James H. York Sr, died Saturday, October 17, 2026, at her home in Belfast. Born in Bucksport on July 22, 1947, to Ernest and Clara (Littlefield) Harriman.
At age 9, Betty was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Irving and Ruth Stone of Frankfort. She graduated from Searsport High School and on March 27, 1964, she married her high school sweetheart, James H. York Sr, beginning a 60-year marriage.
Betty devoted much of her life to serving others, both through her work and her many years of involvement in her church and community. Her professional career included positions at Merrill Trust and Peoples Heritage Bank, followed by work as an administrative assistant at Belfast United Methodist Church. She especially loved her work at the church, where her dedication and willingness to help others were evident until her retirement in 2007 due to health reasons.
A longtime member of Searsport United Methodist Church, Betty served on numerous committees, including as financial secretary and church treasurer. In 1998, she and Jim transferred their membership to Belfast United Methodist Church, where she continued her active involvement. Betty gave generously of her time and talents, always finding ways to contribute to the life of her church. A gifted crafter, she created many beautiful gift baskets for the church’s annual Christmas fairs, made blankets for cancer patients and crocheted a 5’x7’ picture of “The Lord’s Supper” for the Searsport UMC and second one for the Belfast Methodist Church this last summer. Betty found fulfillment in giving of herself and making a difference in the lives of those around her.
Betty will be remembered for her dedication, creativity, and generous spirit, as well as for the many ways she quietly and faithfully served her family, church, and community.
She was predeceased by her husband, James H. York, Sr., in 2024; her parents, and her sisters Beth Clark and Brenda Edmands.
Surviving are her children, Patricia M. Parker (and husband Randy) of Swanville; Lisa B. Sturtevant (and husband Craig) of Leeds; and James H. York, Jr of Frankfort; her grandchildren, Cassandra M. Parker, Maegan R. Moulton (and husband Tony), Zachary S. Gott, Kristina N. Kelley, Jaymie York, Christine Mailman (and her husband Emmett); her great-grandchildren, Sierra Lee Brown, Tyler and Owen Moulton, Ethan J.
