Audrey L. Payson, obituary
ROCKLAND — Audrey L. Payson, 90, died peacefully, Sunday, August 7, 2022 at Sedgewood Commons, in Falmouth.
Born in Bucksport, May 11, 1932, she was the eldest of seven children born to Floyd and Eula Craft Hooper. She was educated in Rockland, graduating from Rockland High School. On June 17, 1951, Audrey married Albert Payson in Rockland. Together they made their home in Owls Head, Rockland, South Portland and later returned to Rockland.
Always a hard worker, Audrey worked for many years as the office manager at Webber Oil in Portland. Upon returning to Rockland, she served as the office manager for Dr. Witham’s dental practice in Camden until retiring.
After retiring, at the age of 70, Audrey took on the task of watching her grandson each week, traveling to Portland to do so.
She took great joy in nature, especially during Spring time. She loved watching the renewal of the earth. Being on the water was another favorite pastime, whether lobstering with her husband, going to the campground or
being on her brother’s island, she loved it all.
She was an avid football fan, and could be heard “coaching” loudly from her chair, not matter what team was on TV.
Above all, Audrey was devoted to her family. They were her number one priority. Spending time with her children and grandchildren was of utmost importance to her. Her children said she was the matriarchal glue that held the family together. Her steadfast love will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
Predeceased by two brothers, Donald Hooper, Ralph Hopper; a sister, Shera Simonton; and a daughter-in-law, Diana Payson; Audrey is survived by her beloved children, Robert Payson of Bucksport, Janet Kemberling of
South Portland; four grandchildren, Nhare Payson, Molly Warren, Lindsy Fournier, Bryan Kemberling; and six great-grandchildren, Samuel, Nevaeh, Ryker, Luke, Oneila and Ava; and a sister, Midge Grimes; as well as
many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Audrey’s life will be held Monday, September 12, 2022, at 11 a.m., at Rockland Congregational Church, 180 Limerock Street, Rockland. The Reverend Dr. Seth D. Jones will officiate.
