Sudden shifting winds, strong gusts send ‘Rough Ride’ to the rocks
SPRUCE HEAD — Winds gusting up to 40-60 mph overnight and into the early morning of Feb. 23 caused one working lobster boat to break from its mooring and wash up onto the rocks at Spruce Head, South Thomaston.
The 40-foot boat, built in 1990, was demolished. According to Maine Marine Patrol Office Nicholas Stilwell, the owner is currently consulting with his insurance company before proceeding with salvage.
Stilwell said he had been visiting all the harbors in his jurisdiction of Spruce Heads, Owls Head and Matinicus, and has found no other damaged boats.
The winds had shifted suddenly and almost violently overnight, from a light north-northeast direction to strong gusts out of the south. It was felt extremely hard over Penobscot Bay, and the National Weather Service had forecast a wind advisory for the region the previous evening of Feb. 22.
“While an inversion should keep these stronger winds at bay for much of the coast, this protection weakens along the Midcoast,” the NWS said.
Marine Patrol Sgt. Matt Wyman said he was also monitoring the waters from Waldoboro to Belfast and learned of no other damaged vessels, yet today.
