Gibbs Library to host gallery show featuring local artist Tom McConnell’s works
WASHINGTON— The Gibbs Library in Washington, Maine will present a gallery show by local artist Tom MacConnell. The exhibition will feature a series of three large untitled watercolors and four large photographic prints. The show will be presented from January to February 2022.
Tom MacConnell has been creating art for over 50 years, mostly from his home base in Montville, Maine. Originally raised in North Carolina and Florida, Tom traveled to Europe after a year of study with John Roy at Florida State. Over the next few years, he self-educated in the great museums and libraries of Europe while he also studied etching and printmaking at the University of Stockholm.
Upon returning to the States in the mid-60s, MacConnell’s interest turned to photography. He photographed widely across the US and Mexico, with his preferred inspirations being Maine, New Orleans, and Seattle. He was influenced strongly by photographer Ernst Haas, his teacher and friend. In 1996, MacConnell returned to painting large oil and acrylic works. Most recently, he has returned to watercolors and has steadily produced in his Montville studio.
McConnell’s past exhibits include a photography show at Colby College Museum of Art, a photography and painting show at Carver Hill Gallery in Rockport, and the current exhibition at Gibbs Library.
The show will be held in the Gibbs Library at 40 Old Union Rd in Washington, Maine, and if the risk for COVID has subsided, there will be a reception held after the close of the show.
