Time to vote: Rockland’s Lobster Trap tree in Jingle Brawls competition
The Travel Channel has Jingle Brawls, a competition among cities across the United States to find the most unique Christmas-themed celebration. The competition this year includes the singing choir Christmas tree of Muskegon, Mich., versus the Christmas Lobster Trap tree from Rockland, Maine. The episode aired on Sunday night, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. on the Travel Channel.
Since 2003, Rockland Main Street, Inc., has been building the World's Largest Lobster Trap Tree. Volunteers, each year, skillfully construct the tree from 152 traps built specially for Rockland Main Street Inc. Brooks Trap Mill, in Thomaston, builds and supplies the traps. Each trap weighs 40 pounds. A special engineering plan allows the height to tower to 35 feet,; 480 feet of garland decorate the tree along with 125 lobster buoys that were brought to the tree by lobstering families to decorate the original tree in 2003. The tree is topped with a five-foot, fiberglass lobster.
The tree is what makes Rockland's waterfront authentic. Each year during the Festival of Lights Celebration the tree is lit with pomp and circumstance by Rockland Main Street, Inc, elected officials and sponsors of the tree lighting ceremony.
As of the time of this writing, 84 percent of votes cast have gone to Michigan's choir; 16 percent of votes cast have been for Rockland's Lobster Tree.
