Teen remains in critical condition following Belfast crash
BELFAST — A teenage girl remains in critical condition following an accident Wednesday evening just after 7 p.m., according to Chief Mike McFadden, of the Belfast Police Department.
The teenager, whom police are not identifying, was headed north on Route 1 when she collided with a vehicle stopped at the Route 1 on-ramp near the bridge. McFadden said bystanders near the scene thought they saw smoke and rushed to the driver's aid.
The girl, who was unconscious when the good Samaritans arrived, was pulled from her small sedan and onto a grassy median where they realized they couldn't find a pulse, McFadden said.
One of the good Samaritans began performing CPR until Belfast Police Sergeant John Gibbs arrived and took over until an ambulance arrived. The girl was first taken to Waldo County General Hospital so that she could be stabilized enough to make the journey to Eastern Maine Medical Center, in Bangor, by ambulance. High winds and rain meant transportation via LifeFlight wasn’t an option, said McFadden.
The driver of the pickup, whmo police are also not naming, was also transported to Waldo County General Hospital by ambulance. He was released the same night, said McFadden.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
Damage to guardrails and a bridge abutment indicated "she lost control before [traveling] below the Waldo Avenue overpass," McFadden said, "[bouncing] against guardrails until [colliding with the other driver].
The Route 1 on-ramp was closed until after midnight, McFadden said.
McFadden declined to elaborate about the cause of the crash as the investigation remains ongoing.
As of Friday afternoon, April 25, the driver remained in critical condition at Eastern Maine Medical Center.
"She's not out of the woods, yet," McFadden said, about the girl’s condition.
