Sudden turn causes Rockland head-on crash

ROCKLAND — While driving in Rockland early Saturday afternoon, a 31-year-old Warren woman crashed head-on into a 75-year-old Owls Head woman, sending both drivers to the hospital with injuries.
Rockland Police Sgt. Ken Smith said that Alicia Carr of Warren was driving south on South Main Street Saturday when she made a sudden left turn toward Water Street. At that time, Doreen Poland of Owls Head was driving north on South Street.
"The action by Carr put her into the path of the oncoming vehicle, being driven by Poland," said Smith.
Carr was driving a 1996 Subaru station wagon and Poland was driving a 2006 Jeep Liberty. Smith said both vehicles were totaled in the crash.
Both women were wearing safety belts, and both were transported to Pen Bay Medical Center by Rockland EMS. Carr was treated for minor injuries and released, while Poland was admitted to the hospital with injuries to her lower extremities, said Smith.
Smith said that no charges are pending against the drivers in the crash.
Updated: Following the crash, police charged Carr's passenger, Edwin Benito, 30, of Warren with aggravated furnishing of marijuana. According to Rockland Deputy Chief Wally Tower Monday, Benito tried to pass the marijuana to Carr in an attempt to avoid being caught with it. In addition to a bag of marijuana, police found a scale disguised to look like a cell phone. Tower said the furnishing charge was elevated to aggravated because the incident occurred in a drug-free zone.
