North Haven Casino wins Red Jacket Youth Sailing Regatta
ROCKLAND — Despite the gloomy weather, strong winds assisted sailors racing in the 11th annual Red Jacket Youth Sailing Regatta, hosted by Rockland Community Sailing in the Rockland Harbor July 27.
Sailors sailed in either 420 sloops or Optimist prams and sailed in two divisions, an A and B division, for each type of sailboat.
Racing began around 11 a.m. and concluded at roughly 1:30 p.m. The event was scheduled to last until 3 p.m., with a non-scored race back to shore at the end, but a rapidly approaching storm shortened the amount of races and scratched the no-score race from the schedule.
After all the points were tallied up, North Haven Casino left Rockland as the best overall club in the 11th annual event.
“I’m thrilled that [North Haven Casino] has been able to start our off-island racing season so strong,” North Haven Casino head instructor Olivia “Liv” Cannon said on the overall victory. “A lot of credit needs to go to our 420 [sloops] racing coach Pierre du Pont, who goes above and beyond for our 420 [sloops] racing class, as well as Carrie Shaw and Nick du Pont who do the same for our Opti[mist] [prams] racing class. It's always a pleasure to head over to Rockland for this event and it's great to see that our racers' hard work has paid off; and as usual, we're grateful to Rockland Community Sail[ing] for hosting.”
