Masked robbers shoot through glass door overnight to burglarize Belfast Jewelry store
BELFAST — Surveillance video captured the images and actions of three individuals Wednesday night as they shot through the front door glass of Belfast Jewelry, made their way inside and smashed display cases.
Belfast police are investigating the burglary that occurred around midnight March 27. Belfast Jewelry is located in the Reny's Plaza, off Route 3, and is owned by Craig Curtis.
Curtis said Thursday morning the thieves made off with about $20,000-$30,000 worth of jewelry, but that a complete inventory had not yet been completed.
"It was a smash and grab, they were in and out in 30 seconds," said Curtis.
Belfast Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham said at approximately 12:05 a.m. Thursday, three subjects wearing facial coverings and hoods approached the front door of the jewelry story and shot it with some type of handgun, shattering the glass. The remaining glass was then knocked out with a hammer and the three subjected entered, and next shattered the glass-top display case.
Assorted jewelry was grabbed out of the case and placed into a bag one of the three was carrying, according to Cunningham.
"The alarm was sounding and one told the others to go," said Cunningham in a press release. "Surveillance video is being reviewed and evidence for DNA testing was gathered at the scene."
Curtis said this morning he thought police had some good leads on who committed the burglary and larceny.
"This stuff [the jewelry] is going to come up somewhere, they won't just hold on to it," said Curtis.
