Maine State Prison inmate dies after attack by fellow inmate
WARREN —State Police are investigating the death of a Maine State Prison inmate, who died Tuesday night after he was allegedly attacked by another inmate.
Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said that 57-year-old Alan Powell died following an incident in an exercise area at the prison, located along Route 97 in Warren.
Powell was allegedly attacked by Guy Hunnewall, 42, who remains at the prison. State Police detectives overnight conducted interviews with guards and inmates. Charges pending against Hunnewall are expected to be presented to a Knox County grand jury when it next convenes in July, according to McCausland.
Powell was serving a life sentence for stabbing and strangling a Waterville woman in 1989. Hunnewall, also convicted of murder, is serving a 40-year sentence for stabbing to death his girlfriend in Fairfield in 1997.
McCausland did not release how Powell died or what sparked the incident. An autopsy on Powell's body is scheduled at the State Medical Examiner's Office in Augusta.
